I need some juice recipes that I can do in my blender.?

Q. Any kind of juice recipe would be helpful.

A. Your favorite fruit, milk & ice. You may have to add a small spoonful of sugar or sweetner if the fruit isn't sweet. OR Your favorite fruit, juice & Ice. The best juice to use is those fruitt blends...like orange, cran, grape or whatever the mixure. ALWAYs add a banana. The banana makes the drink SMOOTH..like a smoothy and thickens it a little. You will notice the differnece if you make a drink without it. My fav or a banana, a couple of strawberries, some ice, packet of sweet-n-low and milk or juice. I make this as a breakfast drink for the kids and my self in the mornings. It's better than a SlimFast.

Does anyone have the detox juice diet recipes that were in Women's World magazine in Summer of 2008?
Q. The article was about losing 30 pounds in 2 weeks. There were about six different juice recipes to make.

A. Hi Erose

I'm afraid I don't have those recipes but I just wanted to say that if you are serious about losing weight you do need much more than just recipes.

You really need to follow a plan which will take into account every aspect of detoxing.

One thing I would say is that 30lbs in 2 weeks is a bit extreme, that's over 2lbs a day every day for 14 days, and realistically that's not going to happen without making you feel ill. I would set a target of 1llb per day and you would lose the 30 lbs in 1 month, which is pretty good!

Detoxing is not easy and to go back to what I said before, if you follow a plan you are much more likely to succeed. There are some good programs online which are for people who want to detox and lose weight at the same time.

I know some of these can be purchased for less than 40 bucks so my advice to you is to do that then follow the program to the letter and I'll bet you will have lost your 30 lbs in 1 month or less and feel a whole lot healthier!

Best of luck!

Kezzy

What are the best juicer recipes to combat cancer?
Q. Someone dear to me has cancer and she has a fruit and vegetable juicer. What juice recipes would you recommend?

A. There is no scientific evidence that any food or drink, including juice, has any effect on the progress of cancer.

I have been an enthusiastic juicer for years; my high intake of juices did not prevent me from getting cancer, nor did it cure me. Juice always made me feel better, except when I forced myself to drink it during chemo, when it made me very nauseous.

I'm sorry about your loved one having cancer, and hope her treatment goes well.

What juicer recipes can I use to help combat a yeast infection?
Q. I have a compromised immune system and regularly get yeast infections. They are exacerbated when I exercise. I love juicing and would like some power juice recipes that will help combat the yeast infections and boost my immune system.

A. Actually I have a better idea. Use plain yogurt as a douche. It works! The itch goes away instantly. Yogurt has the same bacterial balance and ph as your natural conditions. Dip a finger into the container, then insert in your vagina.

Eating yogurt can help but it isn't as fast acting. I suggest you use asadopholis capsules, opened and poured into what ever you are mixing. It is tasteless so don't worry!

I have Adult Onset Primary Immune Deficiency. The Boy in the Bubble Syndrom. I know all about compromised immune systems!

What is the Best Noni juice for my money?

Q. So many choices in the world of Noni juice on the Internet and in the stores. Which brand has the best product to spend my hard earned money on?

A. For your money you won't find it with any of the Multi-Level- Marketing (pyramid schemes) products like Mona Vie (mentioned here) or TAHITIAN NONI INTERNATIONAL, XANGO or any of the other products that are insanely high priced, but when you read the ingredients are cut with water and other less expensive ingredients.

The reason is companies that sell products through MLM networks have to make the product as cheap as possible and sell it at the highest price to pay the multiple levels of distributors who want to get rich off you. Very few really do :0(

The best Noni product that I have found is from True Noni and I have bought many of the other Noni products until I found this product on the Internet. I like Tru Noni because it is pure and the price is right. The taste is harsh, but I found I got the best results drinking pure Noni juice, and you do get use to the taste.

Where can I get information about Noni juice?
Q. Looking for relevant Noni juice information. All I can find is TAHITIAN NONI info and I don't want to buy a MLM product. Too expensive.

A. any old google search will give you tons of info
on noni juice
anything related to the mlm company is overpriced anyway

What is a Good Noni Juice brand?
Q. I am looking for a Noni juice product that is better than TAHITIAN NONI INTERNATIONAL's version. I really would like to find a good 100% pure version that isn't sold through Network Marketing.

A. Tru Noni from Hawaii. 100% pure Noni juice is a better value for your money and health.

I bought and drank Tahitian Noni International's juice for about 5 years before switching over to the pure Noni juice last year. I felt the difference almost immediately after drinking pure Noni rather than the processed version TNI sells by adding sugar concentrates and water.

Is there juice you can buy from the store that is as good as juicing yourself at home?

Q. I've heard the benefits of juicing are great. I want something I can just grab and go with.

A. Look for juices with sediment. Pretty much the easiest rule to remember. That means the juice was juiced and bottled, and usually doesn't come from concentrate. The Simply juices are probably the most widely available ones that are just squeezed oranges, or pressed apples, or lemon juice sugar and water, and aren't from concentrate. Odwalla juices I think are basically freshly squeezed, but to be honest I've never tried one I liked.

Also, if you like apple juice, get apple cider instead. Not the kind that has alcohol in it, obviously, it's just apple juice that hasn't been filtered to remove all the sediment at the bottom. That sediment has good stuff in it.

How long does fresh juice keep its vitamin and mineral content?
Q. I recently started juicing. My question is how long does the fresh juice keep its vitamins and minerals intact. Must I drink it immediately or can I keep it for a day or two?

A. Depends on the juice. Wheat-grass is supposed to be drunk immediately, while others seem to keep well in the fridge.

You would probably have to look it up on google for specific juices.

How long does home made juice keeps?
Q. I have started juicing at home, but just the quantity that will be consumed immediately.
Does anyone know if I can make a whole batch for two of three days and keep it in the fridge?
Does it keep? Or it defeats the whole purpose?
fruit or / and vegetable.

A. The enzymes in the juice will break down very quickly, losing vitamins and taste. I have juices for years, and have learned that juice must be consumed within 15 minutes of juicing, or it gets slimy. If you are doing a single veg or fruit, such as carrot or apple, it will keep for the day if you add a squeeze of fresh lemon or lime, but the quality deteriorates. Those enzymes work fast! It breaks down to quickly to save.

What is a good juicing recipe and how often do I drink them?
Q. Ive recently read the health benefits of juicing and I would like to try it. Ive seen juice fasting but mostly looking for the health benefits and weight loss. Any recipies or directions would be appreciated

A. I'm glad you started juicing. My spouse and I started after watching a documentary about it. We too didn't see the need to do a fast per say, but have found that replacing 1 meal a day with a juice to be not only very enjoyable but also very rewarding health-wise. Check out juicingpedia.com for some tasty and healthy juice recipes. I've found that my skin health has improved since beginning juicing. We don't often think about our skin as a body organ, but it is actually the largest organ we have. Juicing has certainly helped me consume adequate amounts of Vit A, C and E to keep my largest and most visible organ healthy.

Q. I mean I got some organic acai juice cuz I haven't got some in a while, but I forgot I have an open coke. Will it just simply have no effect.

A. well, truthfully, one juice drink, or one soda...

Q. My mom brought home some acai juice from joblot the other day and i researched that it helps lose weight! and i'm kinda over weight, so is it true? if i drink this stuff daily will i lose some weight?

A. It will not make you lose weight. Acai berry juice is just like any other juice. Acai berries are marketed as being a magical weight loss people, but are nothing but a scam. Enjoy your juice, but know that the only way to lose weight permanently is healthy diet + exercise.

what is a good vitamin brand for Acai?
Q. I want to buy an Acai juice or Capsule but I dont know which vitamin brand are good and proven.

A. Acai berries have far more antioxidants than any other fruit. Even more than blueberries! Besides that, the nutrients in Acai berry supplements help many other diseases and maladies, from diabetes to arthritis to blood clotting. It really is a worthwhile supplement to add to your daily nutrition. You've made an excellent choice by adding Acai to your supplement regimen.

What I recommend is to get a free trial of a Extreme Acai, which you can get at my source link below. I think it's a great product personally; I would choose this product over any others. If you don't like it you can just try something else after the trial period, but I think you'll like it.

when lemon juice is added at the beginning of cooking lentils why does it slow the cooking?

Q. why does lemon juice slow the cooking of lentils when added at the beginning? does altering the pH effect the way lentils cook on a molecular level?

A. Boiling points are largely determined by intermolecular (hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic/hydrophilic) interactions. These three functional groups all contain an electron donor (oxygen or nitrogen) with a different willingness to share its electrons and thus a different capacity to hold on to other molecules. The tighter these interactions are, the higher the boiling point will be. The citric acid in Lemon Juice, a weak carboxylic acid, decomposes below boiling point at 175°C while water boils at 100°C.

**NOTE: If you're using a small amount of lemon juice, then it probably is not really effecting the boiling point**

How much orange juice should I drink to bring along my period?
Q. Drinking orange juice is said to make your period come faster, but how much should I drink?
The reason why I asked is because YES my period is late. You don't need to be rude.

A. That's not true.

Vitamin C can induce late periods as it starves the uterus of progesterone - however this would only work if your period was actually due or late, it also requires a high dose...far more vitamin C than you'd get from a few glasses of orange juice. It's really best just to let your period come naturally.

How to make calamansi juice concentrate and how to preserve it?
Q. How to make juice concentrate and how to preserve it?
I have quite some calamansi (very small lemons). I'd like to make some sweetened concentrate ( for making lemonade later ) and unsweetened concentrate or unsweetened juice for cooking. How to make this and how to preserve it? Could we keep it in 300ml plastic bottles?

A. Squeeze the juice from the calamansi and mix with sugar. After which, refrigerate. Do not put water in the mixture. When you want calamansi juice drink, that is the only time you get some of the concentrate and mix with ice cold water and sugar to sweeten it. Do not use hot water for it will kill the vitamin content of the juice.

How much lemon juice should be added to a gallon of water to prevent browning of potatoes?
Q. How much lemon juice should be added to a gallon of water to prevent browning of potatoes? Thanks for your help!

A. Browning in potatoes, bananas, apples, mushrooms and many other fruits and veggies are caused by enzymes called polyphenoloxidase. Keeping potatoes submerged in water will work for a while as it greatly lessens the available amount of oxygen the enzymes require to cause browning, however it will not eliminate the browning process altogether.

Lemon juice works great for preventing enzymatic browning of apples, pears and bananas, as it actually kills the enzymes by altering the ph level on the surface of the fruit. While submerging potatoes in water will greatly reduce enzymatic browning, the potatoes still yellow a little bit. Peel a fresh potato and compare it to one soaked in water overnight and you will see the soaked potato has indeed darkened slightly. If you want to prevent the discoloration entirely, you can dissolve 2 TBL of salt per gallon of water and this will keep your potatoes nice and white. Remember to rinse the potatoes before using them.

I am planning to use lime juice to lighten my hair, how will it work?

Q. today i mixed 1tablespoon line juice with coconut oil and planning to keep it over night. If i do it 2/3 times a week, will my hair lighten in 2 weeks?

I have dark brown hair.

A. i have done this before, just used straight up lemon juice instead. you have to sit out in the sun. i did this for 2-3 months and it was dark brown to begin with, ended up with a medium brown color like her highlight color: http://www.style-hair-magazine.com/images/long-straight-brunette-rachel-24553.jpg

I saw an article on inorganic arsenic in fruits in the Consumer Report Magazine?
Q. Was Ocean spray Cranberry juice mentioned as having too much Arsenic in it? Is it possible without signing up with Consumer Report to get a copy of that article?

A. Two options. If you can find the article on line, then copy it to your computer. If not, go to the library, find the article in the magazine and make a photocopy. I have no idea about Ocean Spray although you might find a response to the accusation at their web site.

Arsenic is an atom and a toxic metal. Since it is not a compound and does not contain carbon, of course it is non-organic. This knowledge is one of those hidden gems that was shared in Chemistry class and which everybody decided to forget so they could invent a new meaning for organic.

What does washing your hair with black tea do?
Q. I read in a magazine that washing brown hair with black tea get rid of unwanted colors and produces shine. But the article was very vague, has anyone tried this?

A. I have dark brown hair and I just did a black tea rinse for the first time this morning. I mixed it with lemon juice though because I didn't want my hair to get too black, I want it to remain brown. But, I have read that it can darken your hair. I know that my hair is much softer and has a lot more bounce than normal.

Does anyone have a recipe for roasting a whole turkey from America's Test Kitchen/Cooks Illustrated?
Q. I started subscribing to Cooks Illustrated magazine, but don't have access to the America's Test Kitchen website archive of recipes. The current issue of Cooks Illustrated has a recipe for roasting a turkey breast, but I don't have their recipe for roasting a whole unstuffed turkey. Can anyone please post the recipe for roasting a whole turkey. I've never had a bad recipe from Cooks Illustrated and this will be my first Thanksgiving turkey. Thanks for your time and effort.

A. Here we go--this is from way back in 1993 (issue #5!) This is a great recipe, but I will say that all that turning is unnecessary, in my opinion. It's guaranteed to mess up your clothes and really isn't worth the trouble...but you can decide that for yourself. Brining is definitely the way to go; the turkey stays really juicy and flavorful.

The Best Oven-Roasted Turkey with Giblet Pan Sauce

(Serves 10-12)

--1 turkey (12 to 14 pounds gross weight), rinsed thoroughly, giblets and tail removed
--2 pounds salt
--3 medium onions, chopped coarse
--1 1/2 medium carrots, chopped coarse
--1 1/2 celery stalks, chopped coarse
--6 thyme sprigs
--1 bay leaf
--1 tablespoon butter, melted, plus extra for basting
--3 tablespoons cornstarch

Place turkey in a pot large enough to hold it easily. Pour salt into neck and body cavities; pour salt all over turkey and rub into skin. Add cold water to cover, rubbing bird and stirring water until salt dissolves. Set turkey in refrigerator or other cool location for 4 to 6 hours. Remove turkey from salt water and rinse both cavities and skin under cool running water for several minutes until all traces of salt are gone.

Meanwhile, reserve liver and put giblets, neck and tail piece, 1/2 of the onions, celery, carrots, thyme sprigs, and the bay leaf in a large saucepan. Add 6 cups water and bring to a boil, skimming foam from surface as necessary. Simmer, uncovered, adding liver during last 5 minutes of cooking, for a total of about 1 hour. Strain broth (you should have about 4 1/2 cups); set neck, tail, and giblets aside. Cool to room temperature, and refrigerate until ready to use.

Heat oven to 400 degrees. Toss another 1/3 of onions, carrots, celery and thyme with 1 tablespoon butter and place in body cavity. Bring legs together and perform simple truss [here's what it says to do: Using the center of a 5-foot length of cooking twine, tie the legs together at the ankles. Run the twine around th thighs and under the wings on both sides of the bird, pulling tightly. Keeping the twine pulled snug, tie a firm knot around the excess flesh at the neck of the bird. Snip off excess twine.--These days a lot of turkeys come with a "hock lock" that holds the legs together, so this step may not be necessary.]

Scatter remaining vegetables and thyme over a shallow roasting pan; pour 1 cup reserved broth over vegetables. Put perforated cover on roasting pan; set a V-rack (preferably nonstick) adjusted to widest setting on top of cover. Brush entire breast side of turkey with butter, then place turkey, breast side down, on V-rack. Brush entire back side of turkey with butter.

Roast for 45 minutes. Remove pan from oven (close oven door); baste turkey with butter. With a wad of paper toweling in each hand, turn turkey, leg/thigh side up. If broth has totally evaporated, add an additional 1/2 cup stock to pan. Return turkey to pan and roast 15 minutes. Remove turkey from oven again, baste, and again use paper toweling to turn the other leg/thigh side up; roast until meat thermometer stuck in leg pit registers 165 degrees, about 30 to 45 minutes. Breast should register 160 to 165 as well. Transfer turkey to platter; let rest for 20 to 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, strain pan drippings into a large saucepan (discard solids) and skim fat. Return broiler pan to stove and place over 2 burners set to medium heat. Add 3 cups reserved broth to the broiler pan and, using a wooden spoon, stir to loosen browned bits. When pan juices start to simmer, strain into saucepan along with giblets; bring to boil. Mix cornstarch with 1/2 cup cold water and gradually stir into saucepan. Bring to boil; simmer until sauce thickens slightly. Carve turkey; serve with gravy.

What is the best Noni juice product on the market?

Q. I want to buy Noni juice because I have heard so many great benefits from it, but there seems to be so many Noni products.

Which product is the best and why?

A. The best Noni juice I have found on the Internet is Tru Noni juice from Hawaii. The reasons are threefold:

 It's 100% pure Noni juice
It comes in a 32 ounce glass bottle
Tru Noni is the lowest priced Noni juice I have found anywhere.

"S V" gives a link to an article that was written about TAHITIAN NONI INTERNATIONAL product and many of their false claims TNI distributors have made through their inception. I can only say that Noni juice has helped me and my family with health issues.

"electra" makes a very good point about buying Noni juice that is organic, but you should make sure the Noni product you buy is pure. Otherwise you will fall victim to companies like "Argo Labs" that "goteated" mentioned that is mostly water.

I recommend you visit: http://www.trunoni.com/still_not_sure.htm

Even though the information in on Tru Noni's Web site, it seemed to be unbiased and will give you an overview of the price and purity of Noni juice.

Does this carrot juice sound good?

Q. Carrot Banana Juice

6 Fresh Carrots
2 Bananas

This is a great mix. The bananas and carrots create a very sweet smooth blend, perfect for a breakfast or desert drink. A lot of our clients like this one. We recommend peeling the bananas before juicing in this case.

And Possible A little bit of citrus fruit.

A. Yes, I would give it a try.=)

A. Drinking water is much better for you. Fruit juice contains a lot of sugar. Drink a glass or two of juice and the drink water for the other daily 8 or 9 glasses of fluid.

How can my daughter get her fruit servings?
Q. My 12 year old daughter is thin, but not a very healthy eater. She absolutely hates all kinds of fruit. She has been exposed to many different kinds of fruit, but has disliked them all. Even if I put sugar, peanut butter, etc. on the fruit she still does not like the.

I still want to establish healthy eating habits with her, despite her thin body. What are alternate ways my daughter can get her fruit servings?

**My daughter really enjoys Dole Pinapple Orange Banana Juice and orange juice.

A. Try making it a fun thing? And dont press it on her, just eat it yourself and she might want to try it.

Try things like cube up some fruit and put it on toothpicks with something else that she likes... Or kebab skewers. You could freeze the fruit and eat it like an iceblock, works with bananas and oranges.

Kids tastes change though, maybe if she doesnt like fruit she might be into vegetables: carrot sticks and dip etc.

A. If you are looking for information on Noni juice, I highly recommend visiting www.trunoni.com and reading what they have to say about 100% pure Noni juice, rather than fermented or blended Noni with other fruit flavors.

The Bovis scaly the other person mentioned about Goji juice sounds a little fishy to me and you really have to watch the claims some of these desperate MLM distributors will say to get you to buy their products.

Does it matter if I drink noni juice or take the capsules?
Q. Also, what brand of Noni works best. I bought Tahiti Noni Juice at the Health food store it was $45.00 for 32oz. I can't afford that I was told my my natural doctor to take 2 oz in the morning and 2oz at night any suggestions? I suffer from Anxiety!! !

A. Hi!

I suggest you try goji berry juice. It's 100% all natural, no over dose, no side effects, and taste so good! It's not herbal (like roots, leaves, seeds, rind, etc.) compared to noni, but a juice (like apple or orange juice).

Noni fruit is herbal, hence not a natural food for man (do you now have a hint now why they made noni into capsules?). Second, it takes a lot of noni for you to consume before you feel the desired effects. I have nothing against noni but basing from my personal experience with noni (plus my family's), I highly recommend you try goji juice to believe. And one more thing - there's a 90 day money back guarantee, so it's absolutely risk free!

Hope this will help you.

How do you get your creative juices flowing?
Q. Sometimes I'm just stuck in a rut and cooking the same old things, sometimes I just sit and stare at the white paper and can't come up with a drawing, sometimes my days are as boring as wood chips, sometimes I want to bless someone else and I can't think of what to do....I love being creative, but sometimes I just can't get it going and don't know where to get inspiration. I have a ton of magazines to look through, but I don't want to copy other people. I just want my creativity back!

A. If I can't write... I read. If I can't cook... I go out to eat. If I can't draw... I go to an art museum. The intent is not to copy what you see, but immersing yourself in that activity can get your brain focused on the right area. When I read, for example, a single sentence may catch my attention. By the time I've worked it over, fit it into my life, and daydreamed through it, the idea will probably have no relation to what I read, but seeing the words get my words started. I may even flat-out disagree with what I've seen or heard, but that's a starting point, too!

This usually works for me, if not immediately than over time if I'm consistent with spending time on it. At other times in my life, however, I have tried other tactics. I have taken classes to learn more about a subject -- or learned something entirely new. I have traveled to a new city, read a new genre of book, and walked the opposite way around the block. People have a delicate relationship with change -- most of us want the safety of habit, but the excitement of something new (not too new!). If we're in a rut and haven't found the right balance of old and new, any little push can get us re-started. And if we're in a state of excitement, inspiration often follows!

As a last thought, keep a journal. Record what you've eaten and what you crave, or sketch something every day. As a writer, the experts say that it's okay to just write "I have nothing to write" repeatedly until something else comes. As an artist, I'd probably just doodle a progression of stick people on the exciting-as-mud days. The point is just to keep doing the activity, have patience, and try not to be too hard on yourself! Inspiration is a tricksy, flighty, wild-and-free kind of thing, so you have to use sneaky skills to grab it.

Good luck finding that creativity! I hope something in here helps get you started!

How to make cocktail flavored spiked snow cones?
Q. I am in the midst of wedding planning, and have been doing some wedding magazine reading. One of the suggestions my fiance and I fell in love with was to make spiked snow cones; however I was hoping to make a variety of spiked snow cones to taste like our favorite cocktails instead of serving straight cocktails.

Does anyone have the recipe for spiced apple cheesecake?
Q. I believe it was in a fall issue of Woman's World magazine from either 2003 or 2004. It had an Apple Butter spread on top of it. I'd hoped to serve it for Thanksgiving but have had no luck in finding it for the past 2 years. Can anyone help me?

A. Pretty sure this is what you are looking for.

Spiced Cheesecake
CRUST
2 cups pecans, toasted (or walnuts or hazelnuts or almonds or a mixture, 8 oz)
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

FILLING
2 lbs full-fat cream cheese
1 cup mascarpone cheese
1 1/4 cups granulated sugar
2 large eggs
1 pinch salt
1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice or orange juice
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 pinch ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon grated nutmeg

Oven to 325 degrees F.
Wrap the bottom of the springform pan tightly in foil.
CRUST: Finely grind the nuts and sugar in a food processor- be careful- don't overprocess.
Just until the nuts are in very, very small pieces, not a paste!
Turn out into a bowl, add the melted butter and mix until it comes together.
Press the mixture into the bottom of the pan and bake for about 10-15 minutes, or until it looks"dry".
Cool to room temperature.
FILLING: In your mixer bowl, combine the cream cheese, mascarpone and sugar.
Using the paddle attachment on med-low speed, beat just until smooth.
Add the remaining ingredients and mix on low speed until well combined.
Pour the filling over the crust.
Place the cheesecake in the larger pan, and place that pan on the middle rack of your oven.
Pour water into the baking pan until it comes half-way up the sides of your springform pan.
Bake until the sides of the cheesecake are set, but the center is still a little jiggly (like fresh jello).
This should take about 45-55 minutes.
Do not overbake!
Don't worry about the jiggle- the cake will firm up while chilling.
Carefully remove the cheesecake from the larger pan, and run a very thin knife around the edge of the pan to prevent the cake from sticking to the sides.
Let cool completely to room temperature, then refrigerate for several hours, or overnight before serving.
NOTE: This cheesecake freezes very well for several months if you wrap it tightly in a double layer of plastic wrap.
It is best if if made the day before you serve it.

What is the difference between juice and juice cocktail?

Q. I accidentally bought some juice cocktail the other day and am now wondering if I should drink it like normal juice or save it to use when I'm making cocktails at a get together. When I think of cocktails I think of drinks. Am I wrong? Is it just another type of juice?

A. Juice cocktail usually means it is not 100% juice but a blend that contains juice in some proportion..such as 10% to 50%.
A product cannot label itself as juice unless it is 100% juice and therefore calls itself a "juice drink" or a juice cocktail"
Sometimes they will state what percentage of juice is contained in the beverage. You can still drink and enjoy it...just be cognizant that it is not 100% juice and likely contains sweeteners

How does lemon juice reduce the burn of hot spices?
Q. I've heard that lemon juice helps the burn of hot spices such as peppers, and I've seen lemon juice in condiment packages at restaurants that serve spicy food. Is it a chemical reaction?
@ Naomi: What you're saying makes sense. Reaching into my memory, I seem to recall something from Chemistry that goes along the lines of "like dissolves like". Water, being polar, will dissolve other polar substances like ionic compounds (e.g., NaCl) but not non-polar substances such as oil.

So, if the substance that causes the burning is an oil, it would make sense that other similar substances would dissolve it better than water. I rarely drink alcohol, so milk would be a better alternative.

Thank you :-)

A. A lot of people seem to think that water helps but it makes the sensation worse simply because oil and water don't mix. The fiery spices in the foods are oil-based, and thus mix readily with the cooking oil and/or natural juices the food simmers in. When you eat the stuff, the oil coats your tongue and throat, and for complicated molecular reasons repels all efforts to wash it down with water. Water doesn't actually make the burning sensation worse, but by eliminating other distracting tastes I suppose we might say it purifies the agony.

So what does work? Logic would suggest two approaches: dilutants (more oil) and solvents (such as alcohol). So indeed it is the reaction in the mixtures between the oil/juices coated on your tongue and the liquid consumed after ward that reduces or increases the burn of hot spices. The same thing happens with lemon juice also as most solvents and dilutants high in citric acid work well at reducing the burn of hot spices. However there are many others better than lemon juice that are more efficient than reducing the burn. Best dilutant I know of is milk, which generally works like a charm. Alcoholic beverages seam to work quite well too.

I hope this answered your question.

What is the difference between orange juice made from concentrate and orange juice thats not?
Q. On the orange juice carton it says its made from concentrate or it says its not made from concentrate. Whats the difference? and which ones healthier?

A. OJ from concentrate means they took the water out and concentrated the orange flavor of the juice, then they added water later.

Normal OJ is just squeexed from an orange and then given to you.

Normal tates better and is probably better for you.

Does anyone have make up tips for the very financially strapped woman?

Q. I am looking for tips on make up that is good and very reasonably priced. I am 27 years old, with brown eyes and brown hair, if that info is necessary.

A. I am financially tight too, and cosmetics tend to be outrageously expensive (!) so I buy alot of cosmetics on eBay. You can find them MUCH cheaper there, even the pricey brands. And sometimes you can find lots of items, like multiple bottles of foundation for a good price, or the like. I stock up this way, since money is tight and this is more economical.

www.eyeslipsface.com has all kinds of cosmetics at remarkably good prices - $1 apiece. It's like a cosmetics dollar store. I haven't used their stuff yet, but at that price, when the budget is extremely tight, it would be worth a try.

I have found www.makeupalley.com helpful as far as rating what cosmetics are the best buy...they provide detailed ratings/reviews on tons of cosmetics, about both how good they are and their price. They also list some very cheap natural substitutes for cosmetic skin care...some of which, according to the rave reviews of other ordinary people like me, work extremely well. (I've tried some of them and regularly use one such item - lemon juice mixed with water instead of the pricey hydroxy-acid skin regenerating/cell turnover cosmetics....for my skin-beginning-to-age at 30!!) You can also ask questions on their boards, like the one you asked here, and get some answers from people who love to try and talk about makeup.

Also I've looked up on google "discount cosmetics" and "cheap cosmetics" and searches like that and found some websites where you can buy cosmetics very inexpensively...you might want to try this.

One thing I will recommend that is fairly inexpensive is L'Oreal Voluminous mascara. That's one of the best drugstore mascaras and I think it's about $5.99.

Hope this helps you!!

How to clear up acne without buying prescription medications?
Q. Im trying to remedy a little acne on my face and mainly on my back without having to spend loads of money on medications. I'm looking for good home remedy tips like lemon juice, etc. Thanks!

A. ALOE VERA! Honestly, aloe vera is amazing! I've only been using it for a couple of days now and I can see results! I currently am on an all natural skin routine and after I cleanse my skin with Bellaboo facewash, I let it dry an put freshly cut aloe from the plant right onto my face. The plants aren't expensive at all and it's really easy to use. It's safe and is one of the best remedies for acne. If you don't see results right away, don't worry! By a month you should really be amazed. Hope this helps! I've also tried honey and cinnamon as a face mask... it makes my skin feel soooooo soft.

Can someone give me some tips to help prepare for highschool football?
Q. Im 15, 6' 0", 245 pounds (mostly fat) and i need some tips about getting in shape (eating right, how much to lift ect. ) I'd like to play Defensive linemen, but if there is a better choice plz let me know. If you can contribute any other helpful tips dont be shy.

A. yup your fat - and you have to lose that fat and turn it into muscle - my son made that tranformation and went on to play division 1AA football in college -
so here is my advice -
first and foremost - its all you - you have to have the desire and the will to get better -
start this way and start right now -
1- change your diet - get some advice on a balanced diet - that will help you lose weight and is best for your body - go to your doc for advice on this -
but in its simplest form - stay away from fats -
try this -
breakfast - cereal with milk - no sugar, 8 oz orange juice
lunch - ham and cheese sandwich - 8 oz skim or 1% milk - no mayo on the sandwich
dinner - a reasonble helping of meat (3-4 oz) all the green vegies you want, and a source of carbs - potatoe or rice and NO BUTTER!!!! - a glass of skim or 1% milk -
NO McDonalds etc............ diet soda only if you're gonna drink soda!!

now the exercise -
work yourself up to a 1-2 mile run every day (my son ran from the house to the gym 2 miles every day and back)

if you can afford it - join a gym - and get a weight lifting regimen made up for you by the trainer at the gym - upper body one day - lower body the next -

don't give up - and don't quit -

and always remember - football is 95% desire and 5% skill - the guy that wants it the most is going to succeed

as far as position - you are built for D or O line - if you get the weight down you could even develop into a linebacker depending on your speed -
if you continue to grow (height) and build strength your coach will move you into positions you are best suited for -

by the time you are entering your senior year you should be able to bench press at least 300 lbs if you work hard -

Any tips or ideas for making an edible fruit arrangement for an office Christmas Party?
Q. I've decided to cut some of the fruit into shapes like stars, circles, etc. Some fruit may be dipped/drizzled with chocolate, nuts, etc. Are there any tips or tricks anyone may know of for keeping the fruit fresh while preparing the arrangement? I plan on cutting the fruit on a Sunday night, and preparing the arrangement the following evening. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Thanks so much, y'all! All of your answers are very helpful so far! =)

A. fun fun fun-

check out this site for arranging ideas
http://www.ediblearrangements.com/

Definitely listen to the dude with the lemon juice comment- not neccesary for all types of fruit, but definitely for apples. If you use any banana, thats the stuff to chocolate cover- cuz otherwise the banana will start to look funky (lemon juice trick doesn't work very good w/ banana)

Stick to fruit that holds up (cantelope, apple, pineapple, strawberries, grapes)

Good luck

How long will juice made with a juicer be good?

Q. I make my juice every morning before leaving the house. However, clean up always has to wait until I get home, and the noise bugs my wife and kids @ 5:45 in the morning. I would like to know, generally, how long fresh juice is good for.

A. probably a couple of days maximum... The reason store bought juice lasts is because of the pasteurization process...

I would say a max of 2 days in a nice cold fridge in an airtight container... but nothing longer than that

Can orange juice and vitamins help cure a productive cough?
Q. I drink lots of orange juice (with Calcium and Vitamin D) and take a vitamin every day, and I have this productive cough. Can these help me get rid of it?

Note: I do not take any OTC medicines, nor do I want to take them anyway.

A. Vitamins are good to take and orange juice is good for you, but there are no real cures for your cough(if it is from viral infection). A productive cough is not necessarily a bad thing in the short term. If it persists for more than a week go see a doc. An expectorant won't do anything for you if it is already productive. That is used to make a dry unproductive cough more watery and productive. If you are annoyed by coughing spells and can't relax the best thing to do is take a cough syrup, but you don't take those. Drink plenty of fluids to keep the cough productive, it should pass. If it doesn't or you start getting any chest pains gp see a doc.

How do you substitute bottled lime juice for fresh lime juice?
Q. How much bottled juice is equal to the juice of one lime? The bottled lime juice doesn't provide any information on how to substitute bottled juice for fresh.

A. About 2 tbsp juice = 1 fresh lime

when lemon juice is added at the beginning of cooking lentils why does it slow the cooking?
Q. why does lemon juice slow the cooking of lentils when added at the beginning? does altering the pH effect the way lentils cook on a molecular level?

Good luck

What is the best reccomended juicer for home juicing?

Q. I would like to start juicing at home with fresh fruits and veggies, but I am torn as I do research to what would be a good investment? I am looking for something under the 200$ price range, and I am open to suggestions and expierences of fellow juicers! Thank you! Happy juicing!

A. For just under $200 you can get the Breville BJE510XL juice extractor. This centrifugal juicer is a great one if you are juicing fruits. However, if the majority of your produce is vegetables then I would recommend the Omega J8006. This masticating juicer is a great machine for juicing vegetables and make healthy juices too. You can get more comprehensive reviews about the juicers via these links

Is it normal to consume more calories on a juicing fast than a normal diet?
Q. I've just started juicing and I'm noticing that each juice drink I make is about 350 calories or so. So I end up consuming more than my normal 1300 calories per day. To be expected?
I've also lost a lot of weight and right now I'm just trying to lose an extra 15lbs that have crept up over the last two years. I'm only 5'2" so 1300 calories is definitely not too little.

A. Depending on how tall you are 1300 calories doesnt seem like enough. Im currently trying to loose weight and if I go below 1500 calories i actually wont loose any weight at all. How many of these juice drinks are you drinking a day? Make sure these drinks dont have a lot of sugar and make sure your getting the right nutrients.
This may depend on how tall you are im like 5 10 so i burn a lot of calories

what is the best juicing book to buy?
Q. I am new into the juicing world. I would like a book with information about juicing, but always with recipes. Anyone know of any great juicing books???
EDIT- Thos are not good juicing machines. I have the best juicer they make.

A. I bought "Juicing for Life" a few years back and I really like it. I've not purchased a new one because this is so thorough. It's by Cherie Calbum and Maureen Kane. One of them holds a master's degree in nutrition. It has TONS of great recipes.

How do you make fruits & vegetables last longer after juicing?
Q. I want to start juicing for health reasons, but I can't afford to buy a lot of fruits and vegetables that go bad quickly after juicing. Any tips on how to make the juice last longer in the fridge?

A. The more fiber there is in your juice the longer it will last in the fridge. So try adding some of the pulp back into the juice. If you have a blender you can make smoothies (which have more fiber). Also, try to always juice an orange as citrus juices act as a natural preservative. You can also add lemon or lime juice but watch it doesn't make the juice too bitter.

Tips on cooking already pre-cooked frozen buffalo wings?
Q. You know, the ones that come in a box by TGI Fridays. Every time I cook them they don't taste very well. I follow the directions and such but can never seem to get them just right.

Anyone have any tips on different ways to cook them or any tips on seasonings or anything? Any tips in general?

Thanks.

A. Oh yes, I do know the ones that you are talking about and have tasted that "blandness" no matter which flavor I pick! I did this test once and it worked for me. I set the oven temperature lower than what the box had suggested. I usually add about 15 minutes to the time and lowered my oven temp by 20 degrees. Remember, these are fully cooked anyways but the freezing process takes away alot of the flavor and you just need to revitalize it. With a lower oven temperature, you can toss these wings with some melted butter, just to get the juices flowing again, then I drizzle some EVOO, dust them with some seasonings, whatever you prefer and toss them in a bowl to fully cover the wings. Then, I put them onto a pan and cover them with tinfoil for the first 1/2 of the cooking time. Then, I take the foil off for the second half of the cooking time so they crispen up a bit. Although I think fresh is best, I hope this helps you to enjoy them!!!!! Good luck!

Do you know any good tips for losing weight?
Q. Yes I know the basic's drink water, exercise, don't eat after 7.
But could anyone give me really good tips something that might of helped you?
Or like a certain type of exercise to do.
I'm also planning on taking the special k diet and was wondering does it really work?

A. Eat healthy: eat 3 whole meals a day. For your meals, you want something healthy and that fills you up so that you don't get hungry again for a long time. You need to also make healthy choices like eating whole wheat bread or whole grain bread instead of white bread and brown rice instead of white rice. Cut all junk food. They are bad for you and cause weight gain fast. Cut fast food as well! If you get hungry in between your 3 meals, eat a piece of fruit/vegetable, low-fat yogurt, skim milk, or fruit juice. THey are all good and healthy and will burn fat. As well as eating healthy, combine with exercise and you will lose the weight healthfully and easily. Diets don't work in the long run. When you consume too little, or deprive yourself of certain foods, you are also not getting the essential nutrients. That's why everyone gain the weight back and more in diets. Diet's are a plan for fail. INstead, just focus on eating healthy. You will feel better, look better, and perform better. Opt for a healthy lifestyle, not a fad diet. that's how you lose weight and keep it off for good.
For the exercise, don't overdo yourself. Just walking, jogging for 1 hour each day will be more than enough. Rememeber to rest for 1 day of the week. Also, if 1 hour is too long for you, you can BREAK IT DOWN thorughout the day. Nobody said you have to get it all done in one shot, just do some after you wake up, some in the afternoon myabe, and sometime before or after dinner. It's more managaeable that way.
eat healthy and exercise is the golden rule of losing weight. Good luck hun :)
